Pilot Officer Douglas Aitken
The Canadian Legacy Project bursary is part of the Military Bursary Program at Mount Royal University and in memory of Pilot Officer Douglas Aitken.
Douglas Aitken came to Calgary from Lethbridge to attend Mount Royal College in 1937/38 joining the hockey and rugby teams as well as art director for the 1937/38 Chinook Yearbook. The yearbook congratulated him on being “outstanding in College sports”, having also played football, basketball, and tennis, and noted that he made many friends at Mount Royal. Always wanting to be a pilot, Aitken joined Unit 403 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was killed on March 8, 1942 when his Spitfire plane went missing over enemy territory. He is buried in the Runnymede Memorial Cemetery in the United Kingdom.
Leaders of Tomorrow
The Canadian Legacy Project proudly supports the Hanger Flight Museum, which is addressing a critical need. Many schools face strict budgetary limits on field trip costs per student, and some cannot afford field trips at all. Through this partnership, the Hanger Flight Museum is hosting schools at no cost, enabling underprivileged students to attend the museum and participate in its half-day and full-day educational programs. These hands-on programs offer excellent opportunities for youth to learn about Canada’s Air Forces and the dynamics of flight.

Canadian At Arms
A massive, interactive, multi-phased project undertaken by Internet professionals, historians and a phalanx of filmmakers, volunteer researchers and others who have chosen to take up the challenge of providing a platform of information that is easily accessible and easy to navigate and understand that chronicles achievements by our Navy, Army and Air Force, Merchant Navy and Canadians on the home front from 1812 to the present.
School Presentations
During the eleven days of remembrance Canadian Legacy Project works with like-minded organizations to speak at our local schools. Our team understands that today’s youth are tomorrow’s business leaders, and educating these youth on the sacrifices made by our Canadian Armed Forces is very important. So many of our children are not being taught about our Canadian Armed Forces deep history and we believe if we are to be successful as a charity we need to bridge this gap.
